war and beatles
I'm folding clothes and towels into a nondescript bag-
I'm thinking about my niece-
I just gave her, "Are you There, God, It's me, Margaret."
She is learning about becoming a woman
while I'm entrenched in war
and human rights abuses of the highest sort.
Nosibah misses her mother. She never knew when she left for vacation that she would not return to her home.
People in America joke about war
War is not pretty
It is ugly, and animal, and so beyond comprehension-
I told my boss
"I don't think I can work in war zones anymore"
and I feel GUILTY
Who champions human rights but doesn't fight in a war for them?
Me, i guess.
Tracy rings out from the radio, saying
you got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
And I pull over on the streets of Atlanta because all I can think of are the refugees, and i weep.
My stupid white tears,
Now I pray at the altar of Let It Be
trying to repeat it... trying to learn...
let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be

You never wrote our story:
unworn baby shoes.
my tree, my monkey,
my soul yearns for you still, Love.
please make the hurt stop.
Running to Lagos,
Your hands and heart were so big
we played house a bit.

haikus about men i have slept with: set fifteen
distant oppression-
your bed in America
was so safe and warm.
your skin was like coal
pressed against me on the couch.
afternoon delight.
Hazy Haiti days.
hopes and expectations are
drowned in a highball.

haikus about men i have slept with: set fourteen
You broke the rules
so this haiku will too.
Get fucked.
talk to me, daddy-
then my head and mouth were full :
I felt minuscule.
Sunrise on Highland.
Our passion and twisted sheets.
(was it an affair?)

XXXVIII.
I wanted escape.
Bus rides through the desert; and
just playing pretend.
XXXIX.
Fast, past cafe lights
Freedom, if just on your moto.
Then we broke your bed.
XLI.
Your thick black hair and
my multiple orgasms
were squashed by culture.

My voice broke into the phone:
"You aren't a nice guy"
XXXVII.
Kiss me, deep and long
(the iman sent you to me)
once more, inshallah.

Netflix and take-out.
Your apartment was so dull
I was distracted.

Haiti
clean, slippery floors,
cheek pressed kisses and
everything upstairs. A guesthouse
that is my own,
permanent hotel living.
Haiti is puffs of smoke and
charcoal stoves, sips of
rum and bottles of bleach. Haiti is
nothing, yet. Need more seconds, more
steps forward and over.
My heart
hurts
still.
Will it ever stop? Will
Haiti....
will Haiti...
I don't know.
To do:
Learn Kreole,
then
fix heart.
